Sausage Horses were bred by the Victorians mainly for Pit Work. Each Horse would work underground for a minimum of 113 Hours per day for the full Ten years of its rather long life. They were very well looked after in that they were beaten badly every night by their Master before being trained to Tapdance for evening Circus work.To keep up energy levels the horses were fed a diet of Twine and Spittle. Then due to a combination of Coal going out of fashion and High Mileage the"Soss-Oss"as it became known would be chopped up and used as a filling for Mineworkers sandwiches.
